Meaningful Use in EHR Systems

It is very important as you consider the purchase of an EHR that you are aware of the meaningful use requirements systems are expected to meet. Stage one of meaningful use began in 2011. Meeting that standard was not difficult for EHR vendors and health care providers.

Stage 2 proved to be much harder. There were more clinical quality measures to track and more patient matching and data mapping requirements. Systems had to be able to track patients in relationship to quality measures to prove success. Portals needed to be available to allow patients to access their medical as well as any behavioral information that was in their chart. Vendors had to be able to demonstrate interoperability (creating and pushing records as well as consuming and populating them) with at least one other system built by another vendor. The systems must let patients view, download, and transmit their own electronic records.
